- You have three basic options. You can contact someone you know, who is (or
- is friends with) the sysadmin at a Unix site in your area, and ask for
- permission to establish a connection to her system. You can call around to
- companies and universities in your area, and hunt for one whose computers
- support uucp and whose sysadmin is willing to provide you with a feed. Or,
- you can deal with a commercial service provider.
-
- The first approach is the easiest, _if_ you know of the right person to
- speak with... a friendly system administrator can be a great person to have
- on your side. There are a LOT of uucp connections which operate on a simple
- "good neighbor" basis, with no formal arrangements and no money changing
- hands. If you can manage a workable hookup on this basis, it's a great way
- to go. No, I can't help you find people of this sort to hook up with.
-
- The second approach works, too... I've used it with good success myself.
- The more responsible and reasonable you sound on the phone (or via email)
- the better your chances are.
-
- The third approach... a commercial service provider... is increasingly
- popular these days. There are a number of service-providers whose systems
- are extremely well-connected, and accessible via nationwide networks or
- via local "points of presence" (switching nodes located in major cities,
- and some not-so-major ones). Commercial vendors can often provide you with
- some amount of assistance in getting your connection up and running.
-
- The cost of the service depends on the vendor, and on the amount of connect
- time you run up. Some vendors charge fees by the hour (fees are lower if
- you dial their computer directly, and higher if you connect via a
- value-added network such as CompuServe). Some charge a flat fee per month
- or per quarter. Shop around, and find the vendor who offers the service
- plan that's most attractive to _you_.
